Equal independence of ground surface friction forces is exploited by the reverse-thrust capability of the engine nozzles. This facility - termed powered nozzle braking - enables the Harrier to be stopped from conventional landing speed on normal runways with minimum use of wheel brakes.

Les avions à réaction modernes ont en effet souvent des vitesses d'atterrissage élevées qui nécessitent un moyen de freinage efficace. En outre, il faut remplacer le freinage par inversion du pas des hélices, qui était adapté sur la plupart des avions à moteur à pistons. À cette fin on a développé l'inversion du jet du réacteur.
